Prevention
If the ankle popping or cracking is not painful, it is usually not serious and does not need to be managed. Although it may be irritating to some, it is possible that ankle popping or cracking may not be eliminated.
Ankle popping or cracking due to peroneal subluxation or dislocation may be prevented through the following:
- Strengthening the peroneal muscles
- Performing balance exercises for the ankles.
- Using proper footwear with adequate support and specifically designed for the sport or activity to be done.
- Athletic taping to provide support and added stabilization to the affected ankle.
- Wearing orthotics such as prefabricated or custom-made arch supports improves joint alignment and provides adequate stabilization to the ankle.
