Cause
The peroneal tendons are kept in place in a groove behind the bony structure on the outer part of the ankle by a thin, elastic band called the peroneal retinaculum.
Tendon subluxation or dislocation occurs when there is a sudden and forceful inward twisting of the ankle, which may stretch or tear the band causing the tendons to slip out of the groove and rub on the bony bump in the outer side of the ankle resulting in the popping sound.
Some activities that may result in the inward rotation of the ankle include:
- Sudden change in direction when running.
- Incorrect or awkward landing after a jump or a pivot.
- Falling that results in twisting of the ankle.
- Walking, running or exercising on uneven surfaces.
