Mutaflor Probiotic Review

Mutaflor The Miracle Probiotic That’s Hard To Get

In 2016, the subject of Mutaflor started appearing on health forums across the web. Many were touting it as the cure to their IBS, IBD, or other digestive or gastrointestinal disorders. I became particularly interested in this probiotic/drug (we’ll get into this in a minute) because I was recovering from IV antibiotics that had completely wrecked my system. So, what’s the deal with Mutaflor?

Below, I’ll highlight the proposed benefits of taking Mutaflor, discuss why it’s so hard to find/access, and dig into my own personal experiences with the probiotic. If you suffer from any sort of GI disorder I highly recommend reading this entire piece. Mutaflor is a probiotic unlike any other…

Does Mutaflor actually work?

This is probably a good place to start. Does Mutaflor work? Better yet, what’s it even supposed to do?

Mutaflor is actually marketed as a treatment for ulcerative colitis. The proposed mechanism behind its benefits is that it essentially kills and reduces the amount of bad bacteria in the gut that causes gut inflammation.  Additionally, it is marketed as a treatment option for chronic constipation; which is also associated with bacterial disturbances in the gut.

Let’s back up a second… what is Mutaflor, a probiotic?

Actually, Mutaflor is not a traditional probiotic, contrary to popular belief. It is actually a form of e. coli… seriously! Sounds kind of scary right?

Well, sort of, this is one of the reasons why it’s hard to get; which we’ll discuss in a minute. However, Mutaflor is not a traditional probiotic in that it is not a form of bacteria that you take hoping that it benefits and helps your internal gut flora through the addition of good bacteria. In fact, quite the opposite. Mutaflor is a bacteria that actually kills excess bad bacteria in the gut.

Mutaflor, discovered in 1917, is a bacteria comprising of a viable non-pathogenic starin of Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (e. coli). It has shown in clinical studies effectiveness in preventing relapse and maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis; as well as successful treatment for SIBO and chronic constipation.

Mutaflor actually operates by starving forms of bad bacteria in your gut of oxygen; thus killing them off. This is why most users report diarrhea when first beginning use.  This is the result of the bad bacteria dying off, exiting the body, and the body re-adjusting.

This is a really common occurrence and commonplace in most people that use the probiotic at first. In fact, Mutaflor brands actually recommend a higher dose to start with to accelerate this process. Although, I can personally say that I was not tolerant enough to deal with this. I maintained the typical daily does when I decided to try the probiotic out.

What my experience was…

Remember, my original intention in using the probiotic was to restore my gut health after a prolonged course of IV antibiotics that I felt had really messed up my gut flora. However, I have to also admit that I have had gut issues in the past, so I was eager to put Mutaflor to the test.

The first 3 or 4 days were a bit tough. It’s probably the only probiotic I’ve ever used that I was very aware I was taking. My gut felt a little testy for a few days, but nothing too terrible. I pressed through taking just two pills a day (as opposed to the rec. 6). The result, after about 3 days the early testy feeling in my gut went away and I actually was starting to feel really good.

After a week or two of using Mutaflor I noticed significant digestive improvement. My stomach would finally feel empty a few hours after eating. I’d wake up in the morning with a flat belly again, and dealt with very little gas and bloating on a regular basis.

A traditional course of Mutaflor is suggested for 8 weeks. I only did 4 before I ran out and decided to see how I felt without out it. After about a week, I started having some negative gut issues again. More bloating, feeling full more often, etc.

So, I ordered some more. Again, I had to deal with the first few days being a little testy, and then… boom. My gut felt great again.

I’ve been taking Mutaflor for approximately 3 months straight now and can honestly say it is the most effective probiotic I’ve ever used. That is a huge caveat because it is just my experience.

The gut is complex and everyone is different, but if you suffer from a G.I. disorder it’s certainly worth a test.

Mutaflor and SIBO, IBS, and IBD

Many suffering from SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) have reported unbelievable personal results using Mutaflor.  Most of these reports come from IBS and IBD health forums, but there are very few who report having tried the probiotic that have not had some sort of positive result.

Over the years, more and more research points towards a link between SIBO and certain types of IBS. Many of these links include a hypothesis that an overgrowth of bad bacterias in the gut causes a number of different gastrointestinal disorders that fall under the broad category of IBS.

Unfortunately, IBS-D seems to be the exception to many of these success stories. Mixed IBS, most forms of IBD, and IBS-C all seem to respond really well Mutaflor treatment; with many users reporting improved gut motility, less feelings of fullness or bloating, and improved quality of life (which is really the most important, right).

If you have heartburn, bloating, excess gas, chronic fatigue, and other gastrointestinal illness related symptoms, Mutaflor may be worth looking into.

FDA

Where to buy Mutaflor?

If you’re in Canada, congratulations! You can find Mutaflor really easily and acquire it from a number of online sources. If you’re from the U.S. or elsewhere, you’re going to have a much tougher time.

The FDA banned the sale of Mutaflor in 2013. There isn’t much a reason why. It kind of got lumped in with a number of other substances during the infected food scare a few years ago; mainly because of its connection to e. coli. This is unfortunate for those who look to experiment with it for its gut health benefits, but don’t worry…

Mutaflor is not illegal to possess or import in most countries (including the US). This means you can actually buy it online and have it shipped to your home. The problem is that it becomes expensive and it takes a while to arrive; due to customs.

I buy Mutaflor online from a Canadian Pharmacy. There are probably a few other sources but this one is credible and reliable. In my experience, it takes around 2 weeks to arrive. For this reason, I recommend stocking up when you order. As mentioned above, if it’s working for you, running out can kind of be a bummer.

The final say…

I really like Mutaflor. It has actually lived up to the hype that many have spread online. It’s clear that it doesn’t work for everyone, but those suffering from many forms of IBS, IBD, SIBO, or the effects of powerful antibiotics may be able to see great results through treatment.

It is very expensive and kind of a pain in the butt to acquire, so I recommend testing it out at first.

Have you tried it? What were your results? Share them below.

      • Hi, I was wondering if you could share your experience with this product? I purchased this bc of all my gut issues and I’ve been taking 1 a day. Did you experience any gi upset when starting? I’ve had cramping with diarrhea and I was seeing if anyone else had this when starting? Its so hard to find a forum to go to, to see what is happening to others. Thanks so much!

  1. I don’t know if stocking up on Mutaflor is a good idea though. I have read that it only last about 3-6 months in the refrigerator. But you should check me on that. I have never ordered it so not sure if it comes with an expiration date.

What’s going on in the so-called “New World”? Mutaflor has been used here for almost 100 years, what Prof. Alfred Nissle discovered there is a sensation! Modern microbiome research proves him right in everything! My uncle, dr. med. Rudolf Sklenar, whom I assisted, also used Mutaflor very successfully against cancer. Cancer is the drug of choice anyway, no wonder the FDA has banned it. What a shame!

  4. Did you stop taking it after how long and did the benefits stay? Or do you have to continue taking it to maintain the benefits?

  5. This drug has been a miracle for me. I have been plagued by diverticulitis and IBS for over 20 years. Medical treatment for diverticulitis is antibiotics and every time I got sick ( multiple times per year) I had to take ABs and my gut just got worse and worse. I was very depressed and held little hope for my future. Mutaflor has changed my life. And I take x2 x2/day. If my gut feels irritated I take x3 x 2/day and the irritation settles within a few hours. No more depression and My mental and physical health has never felt better
